THE CUSTOMER COMES FIRST AT WILKS & CO.
Our portfolio tasting on 14th November was our best ever and well attended which means our charity recipients 'The Epilepsy Society' received over £1,000. Special thanks go to the staff and management at the Lion Inn, Boreham for use of their function room and much more besides.
When Brian Wilks started the company in 1993 little did he realise it would become a leading supplier to the on trade for over 20 years, going from strength to strength by gaining a reputation of selling high quality wines, honestly priced and supplied reliably by carefully selected staff.
Brian says "monetary rewards have never been at the forefront of my thinking and that means I don't source wines to maximise profit for myself but rather to offer better wines than the opposition, whilst keeping prices very keen. Of course this can never be entirely successful but I'll never stop trying to be the best in every area. All too often I come across mass produced wines that are marketed in a less than honest way to the, often, unsuspecting and that is something I can't abide because individuality is something to be applauded and promoted, not watered down. There is nothing more frustrating than eating out at a restaurant that expounds the virtues of buying their produce from locally sourced farms only to offer ordinary wines at extraordinarily high prices. It might go unnoticed to many but some customers will know and that group, like me, will feel short-changed.
Along with my team I taste every wine on my list and only import when I think the wines are fine examples of their genre. I enjoy supplying my customers but equally enjoy buying from really nice people and I invite some of them to come over for my portfolio tasting, held most years at one of my customers' establishments. The public can buy and thankfully do so in ever increasing numbers and this gives me the chance to introduce new wines and gauge their general popularity. My latest find is a truly stunning Rioja Alta from a great family producer with very limited production and his wines have now been added permanently to my, ever expanding, range as they went down a storm at the 2016 tasting."
Wilks & Co. have continued to grow organically with the trade, including a small agency business, being our mainstay. We've been copied and targeted by newer businesses however our ethos of honesty and service above all will never be compromised and that's the way we intend to stay the merchant of choice for many of our region's best restaurants.
